Dating in Dallas

Hello my lovely followers, I want to thank you for sticking with me even though I rarely post these days. Life has been a whirlwind, after getting married, moving, and other life realness blogging got pushed to the back burner.

I have to admit I’ve missed blogging terribly, I’ve missed the routine and creativity and the ability to interact with all of you fine folk. So in an attempt to be more diligent about posting I figured I would start blogging about date days/nights. Since those are my favorite days. Dane and I share quite a love for food and drink, so I have a feeling this blog will pretty much write itself.

To start off the series I figured we’d start with the most important meal of the day: Breakfast! In order to break up routine the hubs and I have decided to try one new restaurant every other date. We decided to do a breakfast date at Yolk.  We’d been eyeballing this place for a while and finally took the plunge today. img_3428img_3427my handsome husband’s second love is coffee and yolk got this snob’s slurp of approval

img_3429I’m boring so it was just water for me. But how cute is that carafe?img_3432img_3430IMG_3437.JPGDane’s meal was The Yolk All Star Combo that he upgraded the pancakes to have the Nutty Monkey Pancakes. The eggs were cooked exactly how Dane likes them, bacon was crisp, the sausage was well seasoned and didnt look like a skimpy dog treat (a common occurrence at many a breakfast joints) the maple syrup had been warmed which is always a nice bonus and the pancakes were fluffy and packed full of peanut butter, banana, and chocolatey goodness. No complaints to be had here.

IMG_3435.JPGThe Yolk’s Chicken and waffles. A bacon waffle, fried chicken, and sausage gravy…Does it get any more southern than this? Well if the chicken had been better yes. Now I thought the waffle was perfect, crispy outside and cloud like fluffiness inside, the sausage gravy was good, but my biggest complaint was against the chicken, the breading wasn’t quite crispy enough to hold up to gravy (a true southern sin) and the seasoning fell a little bit flat. As a Texan I can be bit snooty when it comes to southern staples like fried chicken. All in all I enjoyed my meal, but next time I’d probably just order the waffle sans chicken.

Dane and I certainly enjoyed Yolk, the waitstaff is friendly and attentive, but doesn’t come by your table every two seconds, the interior was fun and hip, and the servings are large so if you wanted to split an entree it could easily be done. I would say Yolk would be an excellent casual breakfast date spot. You don’t feel the need to get too dressed up but if you want to impress your date and wear something a little nicer you absolutely could. The environment isn’t romantic so its very much a no pressure date. Which can be needed sometimes.

So will Dane and I be going back? Yes we will. We enjoyed our time there and the food was pretty good, we’re excited to explore the rest of the menu and see how that stacks up against what we ordered originally.

Again thank you guys for sticking it out and bearing with my dry blogging spell. Let me know if this is a series you’d like to keep seeing. If you’re familiar with the Dallas region be sure to share what recommendations you might have. We’re always looking for more Date night ideas. Cheers!

Fashion Friday: Hot Dame

I will make no excuses for lack of posting…But I had a little freetime this week and I thought hey I should post a little look for you all. This week I am featuring the hottest little black dress I’ve ever had the good fortune to wear! The dress is The Vamp from Pinup Girl Clothing.

Dress: Pinup Girl Clothing I actually tried on this dress when I went the the pinup girl clothing boutique many moons ago and fell in love instantly…but alas I was a little too broke to buy it at the time…but as the saying goes “Good things come to those who wait”. The dress went on sale, and is still on sale I might add, so I finally bought my PUG first love. The Vamp is the perfect LBD, form fitted to show off the curves, yet modest enough you wouldn’t feel awkward if you ran into your Grandma while out and about. The fabric is a sturdy cotton poly blend but still comfortable, as reference I am 36″ 27.5″ 36″ and the Medium fits me quite comfortably. Basically The Vamp is everything you could want out of a LBD…But if black isn’t your thing this dress comes in other colourways as well!

I hope you all enjoyed this post and thank you for putting up with me and my lack of posting. Happy Friday!

A Very Unique Fashion Friday

Well hello my lovely readers. How have you been? Well I hope. I must say things with me have been pretty wonderful, lots of life changes seem to be happening all at once. Since we’ve last spoken I’ve moved into an apartment closer to work and my fella, I’ve had a birthday (24 now) got a raise at work whoop whoop, oh and ya…I GOT FREAKING ENGAGED! On February 12th I celebrated my birthday with my *then boyfriend* now fiance, we went to breakfast and he gave me the sweetest necklace of an acorn and thimble, if you’re a weirdo like me then you know the wonderful peter pan story that accompanies such a gift. Well after breakfast we went to work…sexy stuff I know. But it was the next day that made my birthday gift all the more special. I knew my sweet fella had a day long date planned and he seemed particularly excited about it so I thought I best dress the part, and I could think of no better company than Unique Vintage for my special birthday dress. I’ve always been a sucker for retro clothing and vintage dresses and particularly anything with a plentiful skirt, and if it just happens to be pale blue I have to have it. So it was a no brainer for me to pick the High Society Swing Dress… but oh man I could not have predicted how perfectly that dress would suit the day. Cause you see, my love had planned a peter pan themed scavenger hunt of sorts, and my dress is very reminiscent of Wendy.IMG_0423

In each little numbered box was a peter pan figurine and had a corresponding envelope with some sort of punny peter pan joke and instructions for which destinations to go to. The day started at my favorite coffee shop, then to one of my fave brunch spots, then we got pie cause anyone can do cake for a birthday but we all know pies really where its at, we then went to the butterfly gardens in Dallas which was beautiful, and then the last box and letter came for that one we were instructed to go to a park in downtown Plano. This park has always been dear to me, I celebrated my 8th birthday there and I remember seeing a couple get married in the gazebo and I think about them every birthday and how theyre doing…well it has now become a great deal nearer and dearer to me because this is where the love of my life asked me to marry him. The last box  had a single red feather in it

and the letter was the most beautiful heartfelt speech/proposal in the world…its just a shame I was too swept up in emotion to remember a word of what was said after the fact…sorry babe.

Fashion Friday: Costumes You Can Wear Again.

Well its almost that time of year again folks, time for pumpkin flavored and scented everything, bulk bags of candy being put on every end cap of your local markets, and terrible expensive prepackaged costumes. Honestly I have no idea why Halloween costumes are so expensive, because lets get real the quality of fabric choices and over all construction is sorely lacking, and if that wasn’t enough you’re only going to wear this outfit once! This is why for the next couple of weeks I am going to be posting Halloween costume ideas made from pieces that you can wear again and might even have in your own closet.

This week’s look is Belle from Beauty and Beast…Belle has always been my favorite Disney princess so pulling this look together was quite  a bit of fun for me. 1390141914651405

Best Ever Egg Sandwich

Hello my loves I thought a might share a fun recipe with you all. I’d consider myself a foodie and I really love unique eats and fussy french dessert recipes and the like, but sometimes you just gotta step away from the frills and fuss. Some days you just don’t feel like tackling a 20 ingredient 3 hour recipe. Sometimes you just want something you can throw together and have it taste amazing, and in my opinion this sandwich fits the bill.

  • Ingredients
  • Eggs
  • bread
  • salt & pepper
  • olive oil
  • butter
  • tomatillo salsa
  • cheddar cheese
  • garlic clove

1977 best everbreadI start out by prepping with the most important aspect of any sandwich, the bread! As you can see I was cooking for 3. Drizzle a little olive oil on one piece of bread, then on the opposite piece place your cheese. Now set aside while you cook your eggs.
PicMonkey CollageI used to have the hardest time making a fried egg, it seemed absolutely impossible and I always ended up with a scrambled mess. Turns out I never had enough oil in my pan and I had the heat up way too high! So oil your pan with whatever you prefer butter, olive oil etc… my family and I love Kerrygold, and heat your pan to low. IMG_1991Now its time for the eggs! I understand that not everyone can afford to eat naturally or you just don’t buy into the crunchy mother earth image it brings to mind. But I can honestly say when it comes to eggs the more natural the better. Caged chickens who scarcely see the sun and eat a diet of nothing but corn produce some really gross eggs, in fact I used to think I didn’t like eggs because of that. But I have recently been converted to an egg eater when my family and I started buying eggs from Vital Farms.  What makes these eggs so delicious is that their hens are pasture raised, not to be confused with pasteurized, I actually saw another brand advertise pasteurized eggs and was rather confused…are they heating these eggs up? Is that what they’re saying? Vital Farm’s chickens are eating precisely what nature intended, as well as being provided with best dark leafy greens year round, so even during these upcoming fall and winter months you’re still guaranteed to have the most beautifully rich orange yolked eggs ever! Turns out I just wanted my eggs to taste like real eggs, I urge you to give this brand a try, they’re so good. Who knows you may be converted into an egg eater like me?

IMG_1987IMG_1993Okay now that you’ve got your egg in your heated skillet (preferably cast iron) its time to season. Just a little salt and pepper is all you need. Speaking of salt I just recently discovered that the old brand of Kosher Salt my family and I had been using had trace amounts of cyanide in it. CYANIDE In our food!!! Needless to say that was remedied quickly by switching over to Real Salt. No cyanide just honest to goodness flavor.

I never want to come across as that judgmental crunchy hippie type, but I do want to encourage you to be an advocate for your health and research your food. Yes this does mean you might have to make sacrifices and stop using your favorite brands, and even buy more expensive alternatives, but I bet you’d rather pay it at the grocery store than the doctor’s office.1989Okay well after a while your egg will start looking like the picture above and now it is time to turn your oven onto broil, toast your bread, and flip that egg over! Cook to your desired yolk hardness. I like my yolk a little runny for this particular sandwich, it really adds a whole other level of flavor!1983finished toastAfter the cheese has melted and your bread is a golden brown take your toast out of the oven, and rub a clove of garlic on the oiled pieces of bread. 2003Now finish off with a couple of spoonfuls of tomatillo salsa and you’re done! 2006Voila! The Best Ever Egg Sandwich!

I really hope you all enjoyed this post and that you try the sandwich for yourself. If you do, be sure to let me know, how did you like it? Did you add your own spin on the recipe? What are some of your favorite easy go to dishes? I’d love to hear from you.

Happy Wednesday!

Fashion Friday Featuring Atomic Swag

Oh my goodness guys I’m so stoked for this week’s feature. As you all know I really enjoy rocking the pinup/rockabilly look, but unfortunately that style can be a bit too dressy. Now I’ve actually come to the point where I no longer care about people thinking I’m too dressy, but some day’s I’d prefer to be a little more chill, and what is more chill than a t-shirt? Well I’ll tell you, a t-shirt from Atomic Swag Apparel. I’m not sure I’ve ever worn a more delightfully soft shirt, seriously it’s like wrapping yourself in your favorite cozy blanket…except these bad boys are way more stylish than walking around wearing a blanket.

Atomic swag’s shirt designs are just fabulous and could fit anyone’s taste, men included, this post isn’t just for the ladies. The different styles offered range from rockabilly, motorcycle, state, to hotrod racing t-shirts and all these designs are printed on 100% cotton t-shirts using waterbased inks so they won’t chip, peel, or fade. Huzzah for excellent quality! Looking good isn’t enough, I need style and quality and Atomic Swag certainly delivers on both accounts.

Since I’m a pinup and a Texan I’ve always had a bit of a softspot for pinup cowgirls and this shirt could not combine those two styles more perfectly.

I have a ridiculous amount of state pride and if you’re a fellow Texan you know what I’m talking about, this shirt could not be more perfect! The cream colored background, the vintage soft feel, and the Texas design just combine so beautifully and I am not even a little sorry about how much I am going to wear this shirt. It’s a Texas thing Ya’ll 😉

One Piece Multiple Possibilities

Hello all I hope you’re having a great week so far. I thought it would be fun to do another “transitional fashion” post but instead of a from day to night look I thought it would be fun to show you all how with the help from some select accessories and styling tips you can change the look of a romper completely.

I decided to go with my two favorite style aesthetics, both of which could not be more polar opposite, but seriously where is it written that you can’t like a little bit of everything when it comes to style?

Look 1. Pinup Inspired

Because of the casual nature of a romper I decided to keep my hair simple, rolled bangs, a little bit of a bouffant working, and the rest of my hair down and curled all set off with a cute little bandana. I of course ignore how casual the romper is when it comes to my makeup though, a classic red lip and a winged liner is just a must have to for me, and to set the look off I paired a wide red belt to define my waist and a pair of heels to make my legs look a little longer and leaner than they actually are.front and backdetails9230923893009242

Bandana: Target

Earrings: Kohls

Bra Top: Onzie

Romper: H&M/Similar

Belt: Vintage/Similar

Heels: DSW/Similar

Look 2. Bohemian inspired.

See what I mean about polar opposites? For a fun bohemian look I went a little more “intricate” with my hair doing a fun twisted crown and some soft romantic curls to set it off, kept the makeup very simple and luminous, piled on the jewelry I’ve never heard of such a thing as too much turquoise, added a brown braided belt, again to define my waist, and kimono to give the look some movement. Then threw on some cowboy boots for a bit of a rustic edge.

0126PicMonkey Collage0243017402300283

Jewelry: The choker my mother made and I believe all the other pieces were bought at pow wows. Honestly pow wows are the greatest places to find gorgeous turquoise jewelry and I like supporting artists as opposed to companies. Do a little research and see if there are any pow wows taking place in your town, and don’t worry if you’re not Native American every pow wow I have ever been to has been open to the public. However if there aren’t any pow wows taking place near you I did find this site (Indian Village Mall) that sells gorgeous Native American wears.

Kimono: Cotton bought it ages ago but I love this Kimono from Forever 21 as an alternative

Romper: H&M /Similar

Belt: Vintage/Similar

Boots: Atwoods supply store/Similar

Which look was your favorite? Do you have a tendency to have polar fashion favorites or is it just me? Drop me a line I love hearing from you guys.

Hope you all enjoyed this post as much as I did. Happy Wednesday!

Pinterest Recipe Success!

Hey guys, so lately I’ve been wanting to incorporate more of my interests into my blog, don’t worry I will still be doing fashion posts, but I thought it might be fun to share more about my first real passion: FOOD! I’ve always had a real love for food. I enjoy eating, cooking, and even shopping for ingredient, well not always shopping for them, weekend grocery store trips are a special kind of hell. But most of the time I do enjoy perusing the grocery store looking at ingredients wondering how I could change them into something incredible, another fun place to peruse for food inspiration is Pinterest. However Pinterest has some notoriously bad recipes so you know you’re always making a bit of gamble when you choose to tackle one. But I am happy to report the Caramel Apple Hand Pies recipe is fantastic! I needed to bring something to a potluck, and me being the wannabe Martha Stewart I am opted for individual pies, because they look Martha impressive but theyre simple enough for even the most basic baker. 8627

Ingredients:

For the dough:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup (2 sticks) cold butter, cut into cubes
1/2 cup cold sour cream

For the filling:
2 cups small diced (peeled) Granny Smith apples (Approx 3)
2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 cup sugar
2 teaspoons all-purpose flour
8 store-bought soft caramels, roughly chopped
Egg wash (1 egg lightly whisked with 1 Tablespoon water)
Crystal sanding sugar (optional)

pie crust

Start off by whisking all of your dry ingredients together, then cut in your butter, I usually prefer a pastry cutter but you can use a fork, whisk, or even your hands. Cut in the butter til your mixture resembles wet sand, then stir in your sour cream.
IMG_8637

Once you’ve incorporated the sour cream turn dough out onto a well floured surface and knead til mixture comes together. If the dough is too sticky to handle you can always add a little more flour. kneading

After you’ve finished kneading your dough, roll it out to an 8″ x 10″ rectangle, fold into into thirds, turn dough 90 degrees and roll it out again into an 8″ x 10″ rectangle and fold into thirds. Wrap your dough into cling film (I didn’t have any so I used wax paper and foil) and let chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes while you prep your apple filling.
PicMonkey CollagePeel your apples, if you’re one of those people fancy enough to peel an apple in a single winding strip congratulations I am overcome with jealousy at your skills haha. Once you’ve peeled your apples chop them into little cubes and place in a mixing bowl. As you can see my apple cubes are not as uniform as they ought to be…this is what happens when you need your knives sharpened. apple mixThen add your lemon, cinnamon, sugar, and flour to your apple filling.IMG_8722Stir thoroughly IMG_8723Preheat oven to 425 degreescrustRemove the dough from the fridge and roll it out to a 14″x 14″ square onto a well floured surface.IMG_8738Then cut out your desired shapes, I opted to 3″ hearts, cut out as many pieces as possible. Re-roll the scrap dough and repeat the cutting process. (you should have approximately 20 cut outs) IMG_8741Place 6 pieces of dough onto either a silpat or parchment paper lined cookie sheet.  caramelsUnwrap your caramels and chop them into bits about the size of the apple pieces.pie topsSpoon your apple mixture into the middle of your dough leaving enough room for the border, then add a sprinkling of your chopped caramels. The original recipe also called for a sprinkling of large flake sea salt but I opted not to, its whatever you prefer. Then top your pies with a piece of dough. IMG_8780And crimp with a fork to ensure closure.egg washThen brush each pie with the egg wash mixture and make three slits in your pies with a sharp knife.IMG_8805

Top your pies with a sprinkling of sugar and bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Allow to cool at least 10 minutes before serving and your done!IMG_8807IMG_8809IMG_8814Everyone who had one of these pies loved em myself included, the crust was so delightfully flaky but not dry and sweet apple and caramel filling just knocks it out of the park so they’re a definite repeat. I would also like to experiment with different fillings or perhaps even pair them with ice cream! The possibilities are endless really. If you give em a try let me know how you like em! Happy Baking everyone!

P.S. I had a bit of apple mixture left over and used it to top pancakes and oatmeal and both pairings were a big hit with my family, so if you end up with extra apples too you might also want to give these pairings a try.

Kool-Aid Hair Dye DIY

Its been a while since I’ve done a DIY, and by a while I mean YEARS! So I thought I might share how I dye hair with Kool-Aid, from what I gathered from my mother this was a fairly popular trend back in the day, and like most things from a few years back it works even better than today’s counterpart.

Now for the supplies you will need unsweetened kool aid packets (I had 3 of them), conditioner doesn’t matter what brand, aluminum foil or cling wrap, gloves, and something to spread the dye either a professional hair dye brush or even something as simple as a tooth brush, and a bowl for mixing.diy

Oh and you need willing participant, my dog Charlie didn’t say he didn’t want his hair dye so I took that as willing 😉IMG_8075Step1. Empty the packets into your mixing bowl. Step 2. Add your conditioner I usually end up adding about 1/4 of a cup. Step 3. Stir mixture. Step 4. Add more conditioner if necessary, stir out any lumps, and finished product should be about the consistency of lotion.
steps!I took charlie outside because he’s a bit of a brat and will shake and get the dye everywhere…and I’m a klutz who spills so taking this somewhere where spills are okay is a good idea. I chose to dye Charlie’s ears and tails, simply add the mixture to the area you want dyed and massage it in to ensure even coverage. After you’ve finished applying the hair dye wrap it in either aluminum foil or cling wrap.foil hairlooks like a crime sceneSee what I mean about Charlie being a brat? He shook his foil right off…and yes red hair dye results in a rather gruesome looking scene haha. IMG_8130Well after you apply your foil or film (it was my second time applying the foil thanks charlie) you simply wait for the dye to really set, the longer the better. I put Charlie in the kennel to ensure he wouldn’t go around the house dyeing everything. If you’re dyeing your hair it might help to wrap your hair in a towel on top of the film or foil, or find a human sized kennel its totally up to you 😉rinseAfter the dye has set (Charlie’s was in for at least 3 hours) simply rinse it out with lukewarm water. Do not shampoo it out, as you’ll lose vibrancy of color. Once rinsed out I towel dried my pup, but you can use a blow dryer if you like, my dog detests the noise of one so I don’t use it on him. Also if you happen to get hair dye on skin or on hair that you didn’t want dyed you can use toothpaste to lift the color, not sure why this works but it does.
ta-daAnd here is the finished product! A rather lovely cotton candy pink! Of course results will vary due to differing setting times, hair color, and hair texture but you get the idea.
IMG_8162Also fun tid bit, I noticed the hair dye seems to keep bugs away from my dog. Fleas tend to prefer lighter haired animals but whenever I have Charlie’s hair dyed they leave him alone and the mosquitoes also stay away. So not only is this look pretty darn adorable it keeps pests at bay!IMG_8166

I hope you all enjoyed this DIY and if you try is out please let me know how it goes for you! Charlie and I are quite pleased with the results…okay well I’m pleased at least. Happy Tuesday!

Fashion Friday Featuring Time Machine Vintage Pt 2.

Happy Fashion Friday my loves! I finally have Pt 2 of my Time Machine Vintage feature ready for you all, if you didn’t see Pt 1 it can be read here . This is quite different from my first look but I love them both equally and I think it just goes to show how vastly talented Kim is! To go from the understated almost bohemian like beachware look of the 20s/30s to the drama and glamour of the 60’s is absolutely mind blowing to me, clearly Time Machine Vintage knows their stuff, and researches extensively making sure every little detail is on point.

As you can tell from Amanda’s face this was my last full day in Salisbury, as you can see from mine I was in complete denial. I did not want to leave and I cannot wait to get back.

Photography: Amanda Grace Photography Amanda is an absolute joy to be around and I don’t know if she could take a bad picture if she tried. Whatever your portrait needs Amanda is your girl.

Dress: Time Machine Vintage Where to begin with this dress? The beautiful elegant blue fabric with its slight sheen, ability to stay pretty much wrinkle free after it was packed into my luggage, and the fact that is was incredibly comfortable? Or perhaps the perfect details like the little gem on the bust, the lapels, or the glorious bow detail in the back? Or maybe just the fact that this dress is so magnificently constructed that it fit like a second skin? Time Machine Vintage surpasses all expectations and makes you feel even more beautiful than you thought possible. Kim is fabulously talented and so incredibly helpful when it comes to questions and concerns on sizing. She is even more fantastic than her garments which is saying something! Whatever the occasion a Time Machine Vintage piece will be the most glorious icing on the cake.

Shoes: Payless These have quickly become my go to summer sandal.

I hope you all enjoyed this post and that you check out Time Machine Vintage and Amanda Grace Photography. Happy Friday!
