Halloween Costumes You Can Wear Again: River Song and 11

I figured for my last Halloween post I should really go out with a bang, and what could be better than two outfits in one post? Especially when those two outfits are incredibly nerdy? My sister and I are both Whovians so we attended Doctor Who Day at the British Emporium (had an absolute blast by the way) and once we were done stocking up on Jammie Dodgers and meeting fellowe Whovians, we figured it only stood to reason to capture our outfits and post em on here for all of you to enjoy!PicMonkey Collage4387riverhat shotApparently River didn’t get the memo that Stetsons are cool.IMG_4382IMG_435945274442Drunk giraffe loves Jammie Dodgers43914426jammy dodgerTardis self destruct button…or is it in fact a biscuit?4399River’s Costume

Costumes You Can Wear Again (sort of): Flapper

Hey cats and kittens so this week’s Costumes You Can Wear Again might just be dancing on the edge of being able to be worn again.

But I liked this outfit too much so much I had to share, and if you like something enough you kind of adopt a “to hell with acceptable clothes” mentality,  and now that I think about it I have dressed as a flapper on 3 different occasions, so maybe its a more wearable look than I realized! 😉3881Just casually dancing on the edge of acceptable fashion choices 😉3903faux bob394040643893392138474094

I hope that you all enjoyed this look and that you have a very Happy Wednesday!

Costumes You Can Wear Again: Mime

I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to post today as I was feeling rather lousy but thankfully I am feeling much better and have a rather fun costume to share!

I don’t know why it took me this long to put together a mime costume, its so simple and most of us probably have a striped shirt, dress, etc that would totally work to pull this look off. Just add a few finishing touches like a beret, some outrageous makeup, and even some gloves if you really want to amp the look up, and you have a fantastic costume that looks like it took actual planning to piece together 😉IMG_33903419IMG_3363IMG_3437IMG_3395IMG_34573421IMG_3452IMG_3505And of course I had to pose with our little scarecrow people.

Costumes You Can Wear Again: Sherlock

Hello all! I have yet another fun Halloween look to share. This week I decided to try my hand at channeling my favorite consulting detective and high functioning sociopath Sherlock!

I have to admit I REALLY love this outfit, the purple dress is very reminiscent of the infamous Purple Shirt of Sex (don’t be alarmed its a fandom thing), I feel like my coat is pretty spot on, my tights remind me ever so slightly of the glorious wallpaper that is in Holmes and Watson’s flat, and what’s more English than a pair of oxfords?

Ya I’m pretty proud of this look and hope you all love it as much as I do.

Costumes You Can Wear Again: Snow White

Hello all, so I just couldn’t wait til Friday to share this look with all of you. I was just too thrilled with my results to be patient haha.

I feel like Snow White may be one of the easiest looks to pull together that still has a great payoff, as long as you get the right colors you could do any interpretation of snowhite you wanted, you could be super casual and wear jeans, a yellow t-shirt, blue cardigan, and a red belt and headband for a relaxed look, or if you have a fancy yellow dress you could always do that up too, its completely up to you…So of course for my own interpretation I decided go for a pinup inspired look.

Can you believe there wasn’t a single crystal casket to use for my eternal slumber? So I made do with the bridge.1933and not one prince came along to kiss me…but its all good I managed, all one really needs is proper motivation to wake up…for me that motivation was dinner, you can’t just live off of apples you know 😉

I hope you all enjoyed this look and maybe found a little inspiration for your own Halloween looks too. Happy Wednesday!

Fashion Friday: Costumes You Can Wear Again.

Well its almost that time of year again folks, time for pumpkin flavored and scented everything, bulk bags of candy being put on every end cap of your local markets, and terrible expensive prepackaged costumes. Honestly I have no idea why Halloween costumes are so expensive, because lets get real the quality of fabric choices and over all construction is sorely lacking, and if that wasn’t enough you’re only going to wear this outfit once! This is why for the next couple of weeks I am going to be posting Halloween costume ideas made from pieces that you can wear again and might even have in your own closet.

This week’s look is Belle from Beauty and Beast…Belle has always been my favorite Disney princess so pulling this look together was quite  a bit of fun for me. 1390141914651405

White Blouse: Cold Water Creek/Similar

Dress: Pollypop Yes my dress isn’t quite the right color but I was working with what I already had…However the link I provided is to the same cut of dress but its a better shade of blue.

Apron: Vintage/Similar and honestly a waist apron would be easy to make on your own.

Book: Carry around your favorite book, hey it could make a great ice breaker!

Flats: Payless/Similar

I really hope you all enjoyed this post! What are your thoughts on it? Who is your favorite Disney Princess? What was the best costume you ever wore? I’d love to hear from you. Have a happy Friday!

Pinterest Recipe Success!

Hey guys, so lately I’ve been wanting to incorporate more of my interests into my blog, don’t worry I will still be doing fashion posts, but I thought it might be fun to share more about my first real passion: FOOD! I’ve always had a real love for food. I enjoy eating, cooking, and even shopping for ingredient, well not always shopping for them, weekend grocery store trips are a special kind of hell. But most of the time I do enjoy perusing the grocery store looking at ingredients wondering how I could change them into something incredible, another fun place to peruse for food inspiration is Pinterest. However Pinterest has some notoriously bad recipes so you know you’re always making a bit of gamble when you choose to tackle one. But I am happy to report the Caramel Apple Hand Pies recipe is fantastic! I needed to bring something to a potluck, and me being the wannabe Martha Stewart I am opted for individual pies, because they look Martha impressive but theyre simple enough for even the most basic baker. 8627

Ingredients:

For the dough:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup (2 sticks) cold butter, cut into cubes
1/2 cup cold sour cream

For the filling:
2 cups small diced (peeled) Granny Smith apples (Approx 3)
2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 cup sugar
2 teaspoons all-purpose flour
8 store-bought soft caramels, roughly chopped
Egg wash (1 egg lightly whisked with 1 Tablespoon water)
Crystal sanding sugar (optional)

pie crust

Start off by whisking all of your dry ingredients together, then cut in your butter, I usually prefer a pastry cutter but you can use a fork, whisk, or even your hands. Cut in the butter til your mixture resembles wet sand, then stir in your sour cream.
IMG_8637

Once you’ve incorporated the sour cream turn dough out onto a well floured surface and knead til mixture comes together. If the dough is too sticky to handle you can always add a little more flour. kneading

After you’ve finished kneading your dough, roll it out to an 8″ x 10″ rectangle, fold into into thirds, turn dough 90 degrees and roll it out again into an 8″ x 10″ rectangle and fold into thirds. Wrap your dough into cling film (I didn’t have any so I used wax paper and foil) and let chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes while you prep your apple filling.
PicMonkey CollagePeel your apples, if you’re one of those people fancy enough to peel an apple in a single winding strip congratulations I am overcome with jealousy at your skills haha. Once you’ve peeled your apples chop them into little cubes and place in a mixing bowl. As you can see my apple cubes are not as uniform as they ought to be…this is what happens when you need your knives sharpened. apple mixThen add your lemon, cinnamon, sugar, and flour to your apple filling.IMG_8722Stir thoroughly IMG_8723Preheat oven to 425 degreescrustRemove the dough from the fridge and roll it out to a 14″x 14″ square onto a well floured surface.IMG_8738Then cut out your desired shapes, I opted to 3″ hearts, cut out as many pieces as possible. Re-roll the scrap dough and repeat the cutting process. (you should have approximately 20 cut outs) IMG_8741Place 6 pieces of dough onto either a silpat or parchment paper lined cookie sheet.  caramelsUnwrap your caramels and chop them into bits about the size of the apple pieces.pie topsSpoon your apple mixture into the middle of your dough leaving enough room for the border, then add a sprinkling of your chopped caramels. The original recipe also called for a sprinkling of large flake sea salt but I opted not to, its whatever you prefer. Then top your pies with a piece of dough. IMG_8780And crimp with a fork to ensure closure.egg washThen brush each pie with the egg wash mixture and make three slits in your pies with a sharp knife.IMG_8805

Top your pies with a sprinkling of sugar and bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Allow to cool at least 10 minutes before serving and your done!IMG_8807IMG_8809IMG_8814Everyone who had one of these pies loved em myself included, the crust was so delightfully flaky but not dry and sweet apple and caramel filling just knocks it out of the park so they’re a definite repeat. I would also like to experiment with different fillings or perhaps even pair them with ice cream! The possibilities are endless really. If you give em a try let me know how you like em! Happy Baking everyone!

P.S. I had a bit of apple mixture left over and used it to top pancakes and oatmeal and both pairings were a big hit with my family, so if you end up with extra apples too you might also want to give these pairings a try.

Kool-Aid Hair Dye DIY

Its been a while since I’ve done a DIY, and by a while I mean YEARS! So I thought I might share how I dye hair with Kool-Aid, from what I gathered from my mother this was a fairly popular trend back in the day, and like most things from a few years back it works even better than today’s counterpart.

Now for the supplies you will need unsweetened kool aid packets (I had 3 of them), conditioner doesn’t matter what brand, aluminum foil or cling wrap, gloves, and something to spread the dye either a professional hair dye brush or even something as simple as a tooth brush, and a bowl for mixing.diy

Oh and you need willing participant, my dog Charlie didn’t say he didn’t want his hair dye so I took that as willing 😉IMG_8075Step1. Empty the packets into your mixing bowl. Step 2. Add your conditioner I usually end up adding about 1/4 of a cup. Step 3. Stir mixture. Step 4. Add more conditioner if necessary, stir out any lumps, and finished product should be about the consistency of lotion.
steps!I took charlie outside because he’s a bit of a brat and will shake and get the dye everywhere…and I’m a klutz who spills so taking this somewhere where spills are okay is a good idea. I chose to dye Charlie’s ears and tails, simply add the mixture to the area you want dyed and massage it in to ensure even coverage. After you’ve finished applying the hair dye wrap it in either aluminum foil or cling wrap.foil hairlooks like a crime sceneSee what I mean about Charlie being a brat? He shook his foil right off…and yes red hair dye results in a rather gruesome looking scene haha. IMG_8130Well after you apply your foil or film (it was my second time applying the foil thanks charlie) you simply wait for the dye to really set, the longer the better. I put Charlie in the kennel to ensure he wouldn’t go around the house dyeing everything. If you’re dyeing your hair it might help to wrap your hair in a towel on top of the film or foil, or find a human sized kennel its totally up to you 😉rinseAfter the dye has set (Charlie’s was in for at least 3 hours) simply rinse it out with lukewarm water. Do not shampoo it out, as you’ll lose vibrancy of color. Once rinsed out I towel dried my pup, but you can use a blow dryer if you like, my dog detests the noise of one so I don’t use it on him. Also if you happen to get hair dye on skin or on hair that you didn’t want dyed you can use toothpaste to lift the color, not sure why this works but it does.
ta-daAnd here is the finished product! A rather lovely cotton candy pink! Of course results will vary due to differing setting times, hair color, and hair texture but you get the idea.
IMG_8162Also fun tid bit, I noticed the hair dye seems to keep bugs away from my dog. Fleas tend to prefer lighter haired animals but whenever I have Charlie’s hair dyed they leave him alone and the mosquitoes also stay away. So not only is this look pretty darn adorable it keeps pests at bay!IMG_8166

I hope you all enjoyed this DIY and if you try is out please let me know how it goes for you! Charlie and I are quite pleased with the results…okay well I’m pleased at least. Happy Tuesday!

Fashion Friday Featuring Jamberry Nails

Sorry I haven’t posted in a while, I’ve been away travelling. But I am back and have a great post for you. If you’re anything like me you’ve probably seen a lot postings about Jamberry and figured it to be one of those flash in the pan type things but I can honestly say its amazing and will be sticking around, no pun intended.

My dear friend Katelyn McWilliams sent me a sample, and I went into this experiment without any bias or preconceived notions because I want to be 100% honest with my readers. Well here is my honest review, I absolutely love Jamberry nails! They come in several great colors and designs that would be too difficult to replicate by hand, especially hands like mine, I shake like a Chihuahua on a paint mixer, they’re easy to apply, and they are long lasting! I can make nail polish last a grand total of 3 days before chipping, 3 days of being super careful and I still mess them up. But I wasn’t careful while using the Jamberry nails because I wanted to see if they would work for someone like me, and boy did they ever. I washed dishes, my hair, cooked, cleaned, and did other hard on a manicure activities but these babies stayed put. The same cannot be said for the nail polish.

IMG_5727

IMG_5729

I cut my sample in half and didn’t need to trim around the edges, as it fit my nails perfectly, but everyone’s nail beds are different so trim if you must.IMG_5730

One of my favorite things about Jamberry is that they are heat activated which means no drying time! I warmed the nail wrap with a blow dryer til pliable.

IMG_5731

Then attached the wrap to my nail, being very careful not to have any on my skin as it wont stick properly.IMG_5734

Trimmed and filed off the excess.IMG_5735

Then hit it one last time with the blow dryer for a secure seal.IMG_57381 week challengeBefore and after 1 week. As you can see the Jamberry is still going strong and the polish has been destroyed.

I only rant and rave about something to you guys if I think it’s a quality product and I cannot begin to tell you what a godsend these nail wraps are! I like having pretty nails but waiting on paint to dry is a hassle, as is having it chip just a few days sometimes only moments later, and I don’t really like salons for manicures, they’re expensive, full of noxious fumes, harmful to your nail bed, and I’ve seen one too many new’s segments about how unsanitary they can be *shudders in horror* that is why I am so happy with Jamberry nails and highly suggest you check them out!

You can place your order or ask any questions with my dear friend Katelyn here

Happy Friday my loves!

Halloween Costume Ideas.

Halloween the perfect excuse to wear something fun, eat candy, and spend time with friends. Unfortunately Halloween can also be scary…scary expensive. Costumes can be quite costly, and if you’re like most people you aren’t going to wear it again next year. You’re dropping a lot of cash for a “one wear” outfit. So I decided to throw together a few looks with things most of you ladies will already own, or at the very least can wear again.

For the adventurous type: Pirate.

For the glamour girl: Holly Golightly

95369550954495539548This is by far one of my favorite looks. Cause seriously who doesn’t want to channel Audrey Hepburn?

What you’ll need:

Sparkly hair pins or small tiara: http://www.claires.com/store/us/goods/claire%27s+club/cat1260282/dress+up/p52588/mini+tiara+hair+comb/  http://www.claires.com/store/us/goods/sale/cat1260122/jewelry/p26853/crystal+butterfly+and+flower+bobby+pins+set+of+6/ So I know not every girl has a tiara lying about, but most of us have those sparkly hair pins from prom, I just stacked the pins for a makeshift tiara.

Sparkly earrings: http://www.claires.com/store/us/goods/jewelry/cat1260162/earrings+/p62150/crystal+flower+and+teardrop+drop+earrings/

Black catseye sunglasses: http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=18846980&parentid=W_ACC_SUNGLASSES

Pearls: I ended up layering two different pearl necklaces and added a brooch because that’s what I had, but sam moons has a lovely option http://sammoon.com/items_amj.asp?tempcat=necklace_statement&img=09132013_422_MG_5937&tbl=necklace_statement&cat=jewelry&id=1617

Gloves: Another thing I had left over from prom http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Stretch-Satin-Elbow-Length-Glove-25105_Accessories-Sashes-and-Coverage-Options-Gloves these aren’t necessary cause honestly not many people will wear them again, but since I had em I wore them for the shoot.

Little Black Dress: The beauty of this costume is just about any little black dress will do and most of us girls have a little black dress. But if you dont H&M has this gorgeous lbd for only $10! http://www.hm.com/us/product/14519?article=14519-A

Black shoes: I went with flats for comfort but if you want go for some lovely heels that are reminiscent of what Audrey wore http://www.hm.com/us/product/06850?article=06850-C

I hope you all enjoyed this post! If you try any of the following looks be sure to take a picture and share with me! Heck even if you don’t choose one of these looks take a picture and share, hearing from you guys always brightens my day! Have a great weekend and a Happy Halloween.
